DERBY stuntman Damien Walters is starring in a jaw-dropping documentary about the world's greatest daredevils.

The 29-year-old and his death-defying stunts are among the thrills being highlighted in the programme on Channel Five tomorrow.

The documentary captures footage of some of the most dangerous stunts from kite surfers, freestyle motorcyclists, kayakers and climbers.

"I had a phone call from Channel Five asking if they could use some of my footage from my new showreel," said Damien.

"They wanted to know what drives me to do these crazy stunts but I didn't know how to answer. Being a stuntman is just what I do."

Damien, of Chester Green, is featured talking about his work as a stuntman and his success as a British free-runner and former world tumbling champion.

He began tumbling as a youngster at Derby City Gymnastics Club, which is run by his dad, and became world champion in 2004.

It was in 2006, when he uploaded a video of his tricks to Youtube, that he was spotted by Jackie Chan's film crew.

Two weeks later he was in Budapest filming stunt scenes for Hellboy 2.

Since then he has appeared in blockbuster films such as Captain America, Ninja Assassin and Kick-Ass.

He also doubled an assassin in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, released last year.

"I had to go flying backwards through a wooden window and hit a metal overhang, then spin off three storeys down," he said. "Once the planning and preparation has been organised, you do the stunts for real. There are no crash mats."

Damien picked up a World Taurus Stunt Award for best fight scene in the film Ninja Assassin. He also took a phone call from Hollywood star Will Smith, asking him to fly out to America to show son Jaden some moves for his film, The Karate Kid.

This week he is in London filming scenes for the latest James Bond film, Skyfall, expected to be released later this year.

"I'm playing the bad guy's double. I can't reveal anything but all I can say is that it has been really good so far," said Damien. "The expectation is really high and it has been quite intense. "Everything you do, they want to be bigger, better, stronger, faster and to be as high a level as it can."

But despite his regular contact with A-list film stars, directors and producers, Damien still finds time to return to Derby every week and help inspire others to follow in his footsteps.

"I coach 10-17 year-olds gymnastics on Wednesdays and Fridays so I make the journey back every week to see them," he said.

The World's Greatest Daredevils will be shown on Channel Five tomorrow at 8pm.

“Congratualtions to Damien. Must remember to tell my son about the programme. Damien taught him gymnastics and even though he has given it up the brat is on his second bed because he will insist on doing backflips and somersaults on it. He will be on a mattress on the floor if he breaks this one lol”
