A SERIES of free health walks in the county is proving so popular that more volunteer leaders are needed.

Nine walking groups have been set up since Derbyshire Dales District Council launched its Walking for Health scheme six years ago.

The project now boasts more than 2,900 participants for the guided walks, which last around an hour.

Two new groups started recently in Ashbourne and Matlock and the council is on the look-out for volunteer leaders, who receive free training.

One leader who has been part of the project since its inception is Derbyshire Dales district councillor Carol Walker.

She said: "We cater for all ages and abilities, and on top of the health benefits, we all have a brilliant time."

The next one-day walk leader training course will take place at Matlock Town Hall on February 19, from 10am to 4pm.

The course is free, lunch is provided and it results in a recognised qualification. To take part, call Rob Wilks on 01629 761381 or e-mail rob. wilks@derbyshiredales.gov.uk.
