A 28-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with handling stolen goods by detectives investigating the theft of £53,000 worth of coins, medals and watches from Derby Museum.

The man, who is from Spondon, is due to appear before magistrates in Derby on February 1. The collection of 1,000 artefacts from Derby Museum and Art Gallery's city-based storage facility were stolen between Wednesday, May 2, and Tuesday, June 19.

Several of the stolen items have been recovered from a dealer in Birmingham, who called police after seeing the publicity surrounding the theft. A 29-year-old man, who was also arrested as part of the inquiry, has been released without charge.
