Chevrolet hatches more sporty Aveo supermini
CHEVROLET is hoping a bold approach will help the firm capture a larger slice of Britain's supermini market.
A new Aveo hatchback has arrived in showrooms, with bold new styling, a much improved interior and powered by efficient, low-emission engines bringing lower running costs.
The American brand has also worked on the suspension to give owners a sporty driving experience.
The changes should ensure the second generation hatchback attracts far more attention than its predecessor as it opens another busy year of new model introductions for Chevrolet.
On sale from last month and available in Derby through Pentagon Chevrolet at Pentagon Island, it's priced from £9,995 in the case of the 1.2 LS version, building on a reputation for delivering great value for money.
With its dramatic sculpted front end styling and imposing wedge-shaped profile, the new Aveo brings a sharp, edgy feel to the supermini segment. The cabin also boasts high quality materials and offers exceptional levels of cabin space, with the driver enjoying a smart wraparound instrument panel.
Even in basic trim, the Aveo comes as standard with air-conditioning, cruise control, remote locking, a rear spoiler, CD-stereo radio, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors and electric front windows.
The mid-range LT model adds 15-inch alloy wheels, steering wheel audio controls, a four-way adjustable driver's seat, sunglasses' holder, a driver information centre, Bluetooth phone compatibility with music streaming and a chrome gear knob surround, yet is priced from a competitive £10,995 on the road.
Finally, the top-specification LTZ versions have features normally reserved for larger and much more expensive cars, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, front fog lamps, rear parking sensors and automatic headlamps. Prices of these cars start at £12,195.
Buyers have the pick of 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol engines producing 86 and 100PS or two 1.3-litre VCDi diesels, with power outputs of 75 and 95PS.
Fuel use and emissions are among the best in the sector with the 95PS 1.3-litre EcoDiesel engine capable of returning 78.4mpg on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions for the range start from 95g/km for cars with the 1.3-litre EcoDiesel, resulting in these being exempt from road tax.
The Aveo is the first Chevrolet small car to be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission. This is mated to the 100PS 1.4-litre petrol power plant. A five-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard except in the case of the 95PS VCDi diesel, which has a six-speed transmission.
Chevrolet's decision to give the Aveo bolder styling should help attract younger buyers. Its large twin grille with centrally positioned badge immediately identifies it as a Chevrolet. Other distinguishing features include exposed, motorcycle-inspired headlamps, devoid of any lens cover. Hidden rear door handles give the car a coupe-like appearance.
With wider and longer bodywork bringing greater space for passengers, the Aveo certainly represents an attractive proposition in its latest guise. Its boot provides up to 653 litres of space with the 60/40 rear seat folded.
The Aveo is the first of three new Chevrolets arriving this year and is sold with the brand's five-year warranty.
