Choir hits all the right notes to give tsunami survivors a brighter future
FUN-LOVING choir singers raised money in aid of child tsunami survivors at their latest concert.
Allestree group Sing For Your Supper performed a huge variety of songs at the event held at Evergreen Hall, Cornhill.
They raised £225 which will now be donated to the Isabella Peatfield Memorial Fund, which supports children in Sri Lanka.
It was started in memory of five-year-old Isabella, who was killed by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami while on holiday with parents Kim and Tristan, of Mappleton, near Ashbourne.
The fund has raised more than £50,000 since being set up in 2005 and is now supporting the Isabella Playgrounds project.
Isabella's parents set up the project because they wanted to install children's playgrounds in all of the Sri Lanka's orphanages, day centres, schools and nurseries.
Freya Fowles, founder member of the choir, said the concert, attended by about 40 people, had raised money for a fantastic cause.
She said: "You've only got to look at the picture of Isabella on the fund's website and it breaks your heart.
"A lot of people in the choir have schoolchildren and we all wanted to support this cause."
Freya said the concert, held on Wednesday and performed by about 20 singers of various ages, had gone extremely well. She said: "It was fantastic. We're not your usual choir – we sing all kinds of songs and have a lot of fun.
"We started with a James Bond medley and did Ain't No Sunshine, a bit of U2, Stand By Me and Find Somebody To Love, among a few others.
"Everyone really enjoyed it."
Freya said she was pleased with how much was raised for The Isabella Peatfield Memorial Fund, which offers a description of the current situation in Sri Lanka on its website.
The site – www.isabellapeatfield.co.uk – states: "Orphanages are overflowing with children left homeless and orphaned, or simply abandoned.
"Children are falling ill through neglect or lack of money and their parents can't afford the health care. Many people have not been able to find work since the tsunami, either through injury, lack of tourists, or a real fear of the ocean."
Anyone wishing to donate to the cause can do so via the website, while those wishing to join Sing For Your Supper can call 07723 713125 or e-mail sing4yoursupport@hotmail.com.
