DERBY has slumped in the annual GCSE performance tables, coming 119th out of 150 local authorities.

The GCSE and A-level tables, which are published today, show that 45.6% of Derby's secondary pupils gained five or more A* to C grades including English and maths, in last year's GCSEs.

This was a fall from 49.3% in 2008 when the city was the most improved authority in the country – up from 40% in 2007.

Results at many city schools took a dive but one or two bucked the downward trend.

These included Littleover Community School, up from 75% to 77%; Bemrose Community School, going from 18% to 25%; and West Park Community School, which improved from 53% to 56%.

West Park staff and pupils were also celebrating after the school was in the country's top five per cent for the amount of value it adds to pupils' education from the age of 11 to 16.

Despite the drop in standards, Councillor Les Allen, cabinet member for children and young people, said: "Our 2009 results are a significant improvement on the position in 2006 and 2007 and we are confident that our results in 2010 will see an improvement."

“Perhaps if teachers were able to teach children instead of spending time meeting Government statistics in tests such as SATs they would be getting higher grades in GCSEs. Time for Government and their minions to keep their nose out of education and let the professionals get on with the job they trained for.”

“I know, lets put David Nicholls in charge of the Education Dept. to replace the current bunch of unaccountable non achievers.”
