Derbyshire bowler Clare keeps Glamorgan at bay
Jon Clare transformed Derbyshire's fortunes on the first day
of their LV County Championship match against Glamorgan at the
County Ground.
With his first ball, the first of the 15th over, he broke the
Glamorgan opening stand which had frustrated Derbyshire after
they had won the toss and put their opponents in.
David Hemp was lbw for 16 to a ball that kept low at 45-1 and,
with his fifth ball, Clare should have added a second wicket
but Tom New dropped Gareth Rees on 25.
Graham Wagg took the second wicket with the first ball of his
second spell, with Tom Maynard lbw for eight at 72-2 and, in
the next over, Clare beat the defensive push of Michael Powell
and knocked over his off stump for nought.
Three balls after lunch, Tom Lungley, playing his first
Championship match since the beginning of May, took an
excellent diving catch at second slip off Wagg to remove Jamie
Dalrymple for five.
Clare then returned to make further in-roads as Mark Wallace
looped a catch to Ian Hunter at mid on for 23 and Alex Wharf
was lbw playing across the line for six to make it 159-6.
But Rees was still there at tea on 93 not out out of a score
of 179-6. Robert Croft was seven not out.
