Classical singer Gari sprinkles cathedral with festive magic
OPERA singer Gari Glaysher rounds off a fantastic year in style with a sparkling Christmas concert at Derby Cathedral.
The classical crossover tenor will step out into the twinkling aisle of the cathedral for a programme of popular classical songs and Christmas carols.
It brings a fitting end to a year that has seen the London-based singer perform several times in Derby – the city he calls his home away from home.
He started 2011 with a concert at Derby Theatre called Gari Glaysher and Friends, in which he teamed up with other singers and musicians to perform songs from his debut album, Serenata.

Gari also returned to Derby for the launch of his second album, Somewhere, in August – choosing Grand Cafe Caruso as the venue after appearing there many times before.
And the singer says heading back to the city for Friday's concert was the perfect way to round off the year.
"I really love coming back to Derby because it has become a second home for me," he says.
"The people in Derby have always been very supportive; I've built up quite a following here and everyone has always been kind and welcoming, which is fantastic.
"After starting the year with a performance at Derby Theatre, it's almost like it's coming full circle with me closing the year in Derby, too."
As well as singing at the theatre and launching his album at Grand Cafe Caruso, Gari also took to the stage for Derby Gilbert and Sullivan Company's performance of The Mikado, alongside celebrity impressionist Alistair McGowan.
His turn as Nanki-Poo in the comic G&S farce was not his first with the company – Gari first trod the boards with Derby G&S in 2005 after they heard great things about the up-and-coming tenor.
Since those days, Gari has toured the globe, regularly sells out concert halls and will be bringing an end to his busiest year yet in the next few weeks.
"This has honestly been the busiest and most hectic year I've had since I started singing professionally!" he says.
"I love singing – I really do and I'm very lucky to be able to perform in theatres and concert halls across the country.
"The show at the cathedral is going to be a mixture of songs from the Gari Glaysher and Friends show that I did at Derby Theatre and it's very well suited to the cathedral.
"It's such a stunning place and we're going to be getting people into the Christmas spirit with some carols at the end as well, which I hope the audience will sing along to."
Gari will be joined on the night by soprano Charlie Clement and the pair, along with a handful of other musicians, will cover love songs, classical music, and even songs people will recognise from the television.
There will also be famous opera songs such as Nessun Dorma, made famous by Luciano Pavarotti at the 1990 Italian World Cup's opening ceremony.
And there will of course be a wide selection of seasonal songs on offer, too.
"I'm singing Hallelujah and it's the first time that song has been in my concert repertoire," says Gary.
"When I sing at home, my daughters hear me and when I sang that, they said 'oh yes, you've got to sing that in your Christmas concert'.
"They love that song, I love it and hopefully the audience will enjoy it, too – it's a song that many, many people love and I think it'll be perfect, especially at the cathedral"
