Climate board will meet for first time in more than a year
A CLIMATE board, tasked with reducing Derby City Council's emissions, will meet this week for the first time in more than a year.
The climate change board was designed to help the council achieve its aim of reducing carbon emissions by 25% by 2014.
The authority has stated that target is unlikely to be met and there has been criticism from environmentalists that the council is not taking its carbon-reduction plans seriously enough.
At a council meeting last year it was revealed the board had not met for 12 months – that has now risen to 14. Tomorrow will be the first regular board meeting.
Councillor Matthew Holmes, cabinet member for planning and environment, said: "The reason meetings were not held in the first instance was because we were going through a major restructuring process.
"Now those changes have had time to embed we are ready to get back to regular meetings."

“Well,i did mention the sun and now its in the news that we have to keep an eye on what could be a solar minimum or mini ice age.....
New figures issued by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit indicate that the planet has not warmed for the last 15 years.
Experts say that we are now at the peak of 'Cycle 24' - which is why last week's solar storm resulted in sightings of the aurora borealis much further south than usual.
But sunspot numbers are running at less than half of those seen during cycle peaks in the 20th century and experts at NASA believe that Cycle 25, which is due to peak in 2022, will be considerably weaker.

"P_Bear- I don't believe even you are stupid enough not to know the difference between climate and weather."
On the conrary - its YOU eco-loons who tell us that every bit of wond, every warm spell, every cold snap, and every drop of rain, is all "evidence" of climate change.”

“FYI - the latest on the nitrogen dioxide scandal in the UK. NO2 an even worse greenhouse gas than CO2. (NB We have 2 Air Quality management Areas for it inDerby - inner and outer ring roads)
The Climate Board would find it helpful to work with the Environnental Health and Transport Depts on this one, and the NHS for the increased numbers of respiratory cases admitted to doctors, hospitals in Derby - NO2 affects respiratory systems

.........then theres the
- 172,000 tonnes of CO2 fromthe RRS/Shanks incinerator,(pre-inquiry meet on 30th march possibly)
- the 30,000 tonnes CO2 fromthe O-GEN incinerator behind Sainsburys and B&Q on Os Pk Rd, (to start up in July 2012 now, which will first further pollute the AQMA for NO2 btw, then the planned RRS/Shanks incineration plant will improve it - joke.))
- the amount of CO2 fromthe proposed Sainsburys incineration plant on Kingsway at their supermarket there, as approx 1500-1900g of CO2 is produced for every 1000g of waste pellets burned and they want to burn approx 1000 tons a year)

“Just thought i would point out that i am me,no-one else before i am accused of being someone else who may or may not have similar views.
Anyway,we are travelling through regions of space that none of us are familiar with (unless there are any timelords or immortal highlanders out there :) and also do not have records for.
How can anyone honestly say that this region where we are situated right now is not a warm spot, warmer than where we have been for the past 15 years?
There is evidence out there that some regions of space are warmer than others (background radiation) but overall it is getting cooler as time goes on.
Pockets of trapped heat seems more acceptable to my mind, kind of like the house im in,it has quite a few cold and hot spots :)”

“We're coming out of what is still classified as an "ice-age", so it's a natural cycle!
Admittedly we're poisoning the atmosphere with our consumption of dinosaur juice (ie. oil), but the atmosphere does fluctuate, whether humans exist or not...”

“P_bear - your numerous posts under various names have proved over and over that, aside from possibly dogs and disabled parking spaces, you care about little other than yourself and your personal comfort. You seem to feel that money allows the person who possesses it to act in whatever way they wish, and that preservation of your personal way of life is the only priority. Refusing to believe there is anything that can be done about climate change is just another example of your insularity, and how you don't care about anything unless it demonstrably affects you personally, right here and now. To you, everything is as simple as left or right wing political dogma and you don't have the vision to see any further. Thankfully, there are many people in the world who don't feel the same way you do, and instead feel a wider responsibility to other people. The difference is that however unpleasant you sometimes are, they would still do something for your benefit, while you would do nothing for theirs.”

“It is true that there are still some who
deny that global warming is taking place,
or that it constitutes a serious problem.
Others, while recognizing that global
warming is occurring, do not accept that it
results from human activities and hence
effectively deny that action can be taken to
combat it. The great majority of
atmospheric scientists, however, now
accept that man-made emissions-- chiefly,
but not only, of carbon dioxide-- are
aggravating the so-called 'greenhouse
effect', thereby causing the world to warm
up to what amounts to a dangerous
extent.”
