GARETH Roberts will be given as long as possible to shake off a calf injury ahead of Derby County's televised Championship clash against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday night.

Roberts limped off after 27 minutes of the draw against Cardiff City on Tuesday night.

The experienced left-back was assessed yesterday and manager Nigel Clough said: "His calf is pretty stiff and we will see how much we can work with him and what the physios can do before Saturday.

"We have certainly not ruled him out yet. We will leave it probably until Saturday morning before we make a decision."

Utility defender James O'Connor replaced Roberts against Cardiff.

"That's what we brought Jimmy in for," said Clough.

"He wants to try and be a starter but we think the back four we've got in John Brayford, Richard Keogh, Jake Buxton and Gareth Roberts is our preferred one at the moment.

"But Jimmy is always there knocking on the door."

O'Connor, a right-back, has filled in at left-back and centre-back already this season in his 11 starts.

“We need a 100% fit left back at fester be cause Dyer is lightening quick he gives us problems every time we play them think i would risk Hoganson but knowing the manager he will go with totally right footed Oconner”

“I actually though O'Connor played well on Tuesday night, so no real fear if Roberts doesn't recover.

And while Buxton looks to have come on leaps and bounds, I personally feel O'Brien or Naylor should be given the chance.”

“We need to either sign a new LB or use one of the academy lads. Im not saying O'connor is pants but im a fan of a left footer being at left back.”
