MIKE Brett has been named the new head coach of Belper Marlin

A local GP, he has been an active Masters swimmer and assistant coach with the club for the last six years.

Already an active committee member, Brett has family members who swim for the club.

After captaining the English Universities and claiming a number of Nottinghamshire county and Midland District records in the early 1980s, he went on to study sports medicine at the University of Arizona and muscle physiology at Nottingham University.

He is also a British Masters record holder at 50m freestyle and 100m individual medley and claimed five top-10 places at the World Masters Championship in Perth, Australia, two years ago.

Former Derventio eXcel girls' captain Rebecca Harrison – one of the first swimmers to join the county's elite squad on its inception in 2003 – has also been recruited to the Marlin coaching staff after returning from a scholarship at Indian River State College , Florida.

The 19-year-old, who won Derbyshire ASA championships in freestyle and backstroke and also claimed Midland titles, will be an assistant coach at the club where she began her career in 1997.

As well as her talents in swimming, Harrison also specialises in teaching deaf children and is able to sign fluently.
