"Coffee cup" goal helps Derby County to sink Nottingham Forest
ON this day in 2004 Derby County beat rivals Nottingham Forest 4-2 at Pride Park Stadium with the help of the famous "coffee cup" goal.
Derby lead 1-0 at the time when Forest goalkeeper Barry Roche went to clear a back pass from Wes Morgan.
The ball bobbled up off a stray coffee cup which was among the litter swirling around the pitch.
The ball came off the keeper's shin and dropped invitingly to Rams striker Paul Peschisolido, who guided his finish into an empty net.
"I saw the ball bobble and come off the keeper's shin, and I thought 'it's Christmas'," said Peschisolido.
After conceding such a bizarre goal, Roche said: "I'm devastated. I'm sure it will be run and run on A Question of Sport."
