THE boss of an online electrical dealer believes Comet going into administration is a sign of changes in the way people buy electrical goods.

Nick Glynne, managing director of South Normanton-based Appliances Direct, said its troubles signalled the death of traditional retailers.

He said: "Comet going into administration has nothing to do with the recession.

"Electrical high street names are suffering or going to the wall. They need to face the fact that the market has shifted and that customers are primarily looking online to buy their goods.

"There has been a huge growth in online shopping but electrical retailers haven't been quick enough to see this."

The Comet store at Kingsway Retail Park, Derby, is still being traded by administrators.

“This story is a bit rubbish really. Boss of on-line electrical retailer states on-line purchasing of electrical items is the way to go. Possibly by purchasing from his on-line electrical retail store now that this story has provided some publicity for it. The irony is that Comet, as well as Dixons and Currys, offer on-line shopping.”

“I am sorry for the people losing their jobs, but this store deserved it - I agree with all the comments about customer service, it was indeed pretty rotten.
When you employ people on low wages, you get no particular committment and it certainly showed - no knowledge of products, no experience in electricals, it just screamed 'profit first, customer last' from the minute you walked in the store. Farewell Comet, a longer streak of starry p**s you'd be hard pushed to observe”

No - its a sign of reubbish customer service which means customers don't return. Unfortunately bad customer service done on the cheap with call centres is all too common nowdays.”

“At the end of the day any business is only as good as the people who manage it. Without a descent infrastructure in place and branching out too big and too fast is not sustainable.

The fact remains that Opcaptica have not secured any kind of business recovery and think it is much more viable for them to finish it rather then turn the business around. They had no leverage in securing the insurance the business needed to keep trading. All that is left is a another finished household British name, 6,600 people out of employment putting further drain on our own economy whilst the millions made out of this demise will line the pockets of an American - it is a lose lose situation.”

“I found the store staff and goods were okay, and the late opening was a bonus, but they were let down by atrocious standards of customer service if any item went wrong; they'd do anything and everything they could rather than give you a refund or replacement for goods that were plainly faulty. I resolved to never buy anything else from Comet unless it was simple enough to fix myself, or cheap enough to throw away, if it went wrong.

Hope all the store staff who are made redundant find new jobs. Hope the ex-Customer Service staff don't!”

“the Derby should was dreadful - items on shelves with no prices; prices on shelves that didn't relate to the items on display; things permanently in the wrong place - always felt that the staff really couldn't be bothered whether you bought anything or not.....”
