KRIS Commons' display for Derby County against play-off hopefuls Sheffield United was labelled his best of the season.

Commons started a second consecutive game for the first time in more than three months and partnered Rob Hulse in the Rams' attack during the 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane.

Manager Nigel Clough was impressed with the front two.

"That was as good a performance as Kris has put in this season," said Clough.

"He looked dangerous every time he got the ball. He worked hard and if he has to come off with seven or eight minutes to go because he is absolutely shattered, that is fine by us, same with Rob Hulse.

"On another day with maybe a break in the box they would have got themselves a goal."

Commons and Hulse have had stop-start seasons.

Injuries and form have restricted Commons to only seven starts in the League. Hulse missed much of pre-season with a groin injury but he has looked his old self in the last three games.

The two combined for the winning goal against Nottingham Forest and impressed again on Saturday.

"When they are playing like that, they make a big difference to the side. When they were playing like they were a few weeks ago, not as much," said Clough.

"I think the whole team has stepped it up but the front two can set the standard.

"If they are defending from the front and closing down it sets everybody else off."
