Consultants appointed to redesign Debenhams area
A TEAM of consultants has been chosen to come up with a plan for regenerating the Becket Well area of the city – including the former Debenhams store.
Derby Cityscape, the urban regeneration company spearheading the £2bn redevelopment of the city centre, has chosen a consultancy team which will be led by Scott Wilson Ltd and include expertise from Maber Architects.

The team will produce a development strategy for the Becket Well site, incorporating the old Debenhams building on Victoria Street and the area adjacent the building including the Duckworth Square site.

“What does it matter as long as something is done about the area, it is desparate to be sorted out . We walked through the city centre the other evening and I am ashamed to say that I was born and brought up here. Derelict buildings going to waste , pubs everywhere, bill-posted boarded up windows to mention but a few of the 'sights', and nothing of the character that Derby used to have. The heart has gone out of the town centre along with the people.”

“What exactly do you want? Leave it - people moan that it's unsightly and getting worse. Appoint someone to do start to do something about it - moan because it will cost money. News just in - to redevelop the area will cost money. Shock. angela - those grapes are very sour anren't they? And they are lasting quite some time too.”

“Why bother ?
The council have already ruined Derby - parking is appalling and expensive, the Westfield Centre is a ugly carbuncle that look no different from all the other shopping centres in all the other towns throughout Britain.
We dont even have a bus station, and when and if it is finally built - they are putting it in the wrong place.
The ONLY part of Derby that has not been totally destroyed so far is Sadlergate - Irongate, and no doubt it will be before long.
Why is it that these muppets in the council have the overwhelming need to frantically try to copy places like Nottingham? Why do they constantly try to destroy Derbys individuality?
Maybe they could tear Debanhams down - and make it into a staff car park for the new Hospital since they forgot to build enough parking spaces there. That would be the kind of lunatic idea you would expect from what must be one of the worst councils in Britain.”

“What exactly is Cityscape? I thought they were there to come up with ideas for regenerating Derby and if so why on earth are they paying someone else to come up with ideas? It will probably as Jon says and become yet another car park, if Derby hasn't been able to come up with some ideas for the land in some 20/30 years it has been empty and derelict all that says is we have some really stupid people running Derby. Duckworth Square was teeming with shoppers when I was in my teens, what did people expect when the council built the eagle centre? it took trade from Duckworth Square ensuring its demise. much the same as westfield, now the Cathedral quarter is suffering, that too will need some regeneration in years to come. Will they then hire some other consultants to tell them what to do with it?”
