PLANS for a major waste-to-energy power station in Derby have been recommended for approval despite massive objections from people living nearby.

Derby City Council officers have suggested that councillors give the go-ahead to Cyclamax's plans for a plant at the new Derby Commercial Park, off Raynesway.

It would deal with 100,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste from city firms a year, recycling some and turning the rest into energy by a process called gasification.

The scheme is designed to minimise the amount of waste going into landfill, but people living in Spondon and Alvaston say they are concerned that small particles emitted by the plant will affect their health.

More than 500 letters of objection have been sent to the council as well as several petitions, one with 1,881 signatures.

Derby North MP Bob Laxton has also expressed concern.

But council officers say any adverse health effects are expected to be "extremely small". The plans now go before the city council's planning control committee on Thursday.

    “Sorry May 6th.
I just had a senior moment. Perhaps its a result of all the pollution in the air we've suffered from in Spondon over the years.”

“Once again we have a consultation with the residents of Derby and its results are ignored. How can anyone have a modicum of trust in a regime that is elected to represent the community when it holds their views in contempt? On May 3rd we have the opportunity to get the Lib/Dem disasters out. If we feel strongly enough about this issue then the Tories locally are for it, Labour against it and the Lib/Dems are on the fence "again" This regime is totally led by the nose by its officers and have abrogated all decision making to them. Time for the people to speak out and demand not to be guinea pigs in a scientific game of chance.”

“No surprise there then, the council are reknowned for ignoring the wishes of the residents of Derby. Objections and petitions hold no sway with the Lib Dems.
Time for them to go along with the other parties who agreed with them.”
