Councillor takes to mobility scooter for the day
MOBILITY scooter users were joined by a city councillor for the day in an effort to highlight the problems faced by people using the vehicles in Derby.
The idea came about after pensioner Jean Wallace contacted Boulton ward councillor Ranjit Banwait and challenged him to find out for himself the difficulties she encountered on a daily basis.

scooter challenge: Councillor Ranjit Banwait with Jean Wallace, 86, and Linda Redmond from Mobility at Home.
Yesterday the pair, along with other users, travelled around Alvaston and identified overgrown hedges, vehicles parked on the pavement, bollards and a lack of drop kerbs as problems which needed to be tackled.

Mrs Wallace, 86, has been using a mobility scooter for five years after her eyesight deteriorated, meaning she was unable to drive her car any more.
She said: "I use my buggy to go to Shelton Lock to get my hair done and to Allenton and Alvaston to do my shopping.
"It gives me freedom to get out and about but it can be very hard work, especially getting on and off pavements. Ranjit had written to me about problems with boy racers so I wrote back and told him about my own problems and challenged him to come along with me one day."
Mr Banwait was provided with a scooter for the day by Mobility at Home, based in the Eagle Market, to enable him to take part in the challenge.
He said: "A lot of our district centres are just not particularly pedestrian-friendly and were designed at a time when mobility scooters were not really around. With an ageing population there are going to be more and more people using scooters and wheelchairs in the future.
"But it's not just about mobility scooter users – these issues affect senior citizens, parents with push chairs and the disabled.
"The positive thing about Alvaston is that it is in the process of being improved at the moment so hopefully some of these issues can be addressed."

During yesterday's event, the group travelled from Field Lane, along Shardlow Road, Harvey Road and into Alvaston district centre.
They met two vehicles which were parked on the pavement, stopping them from getting through.
They also encountered problems with hedges which had overgrown and were blocking the pavement.
Although it is not illegal to park on a pavement, a driver can be charged with obstruction if they block wheelchair users from passing them on the pavement.
Mr Banwait is now considering putting forward a motion asking Derby City Council to take up the issue and prioritise improvements such as providing more drop kerbs.

“Jason
There are 2 types of electric scooter, one has a maximum speed of 4 miles per hour (pavement use) and the other 8 miles per hour (fixed maximum) for road and pavement use. I don't find this unbelievable.”

“I would have to agree with several comments relating to the speed of some of these scooters & I also feel there should be some etiquette shown by the people using them. The speed of some of these scooters (not all) is unbelievable & I don¿t believe many of the people using them have the sufficient reaction times to avoid pedestrians, especially when driving through the city centre.”

“I would like to ask the Derby Evening Telegraph if they could possibly set up a new BLOG with regard to who says what, about whom and when it was said - so that the rest of us can discuss the story in hand without being side-tracked by personal insults, accusations and anything but the story we are supposed to be commenting on!”

“The cyber equivalent of "I know you are, but what am I?" from John there... nice.
Perhaps one day you'll have enough nous to create a point of your own, but that doesn't seem to be working out so well for you, does it? Perhaps you'd be better served cut and pasting all my comments from here on in...
Happy to oblige.”

“I cant tell you how fed up i am of seeing these pathetic arguments by apparently grown adults everytime i look at a story on here. Has no-one got anything better to do?
People should stick to making relevant comments on the articles rather then sniping at eachother.”

“John & Ram Fan; Chill out, the pair of you, neither of you are right all the time, you both give reasoned arguments some of the time, then spoil it all by your petty sniping at each other. Are you secretly in love with each other??!!”

“Sue me then.
You think you have grounds, I give the DET permission to pass my details on to any reputable lawyer in exchange for yours.
I'll bate my breath, because you're not a keyboard warrior at all, are you...? I'll wait by the letterbox.”
