A BADGER cull could take place in Derbyshire within two years, the area's National Farmers' Union has claimed.

The statement follows yesterday's announcement by Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman that she is "strongly-minded" to allow controlled culling in England.

The Government had been consulting on whether badgers should be shot to help control bovine tuberculosis as the animals are blamed for spreading the disease to cattle herds.

Parts of West Derbyshire and East Staffordshire are among areas worst affected by the disease.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) says culling licences will be issued by Natural England – the government's adviser on the natural environment.

A consultation will now be held on what guidance Natural England should get on how to issue licences.

Two pilot areas for the cull will then be selected to, Defra says, "confirm the effectiveness and humaneness of controlled shooting". Only then, it says, "would this policy be rolled out more widely".

Richard Hezlet, the NFU's East Midlands director, said he believed the first culling would be in June next year.

He added: "I expect Derbyshire to have the ability to cull wildlife in conjunction with a wider TB strategy within two years."

He says the wider strategy will involve restricting cattle movements and increased bio-security.

Animal rights groups have called on consumers to boycott beef and dairy products in protest.

“by Derby_born - "Write to your MPs and remind them of these facts."

And tell them that you will remember whether they did anything come the next election. Thats the only time MPs give a damn about mere peasants, when they need our votes.”

“This from the RSPCA: The Independent Scientific Group on cattle TB (ISG) published its final report in 2007. It was the result of painstaking research over nearly ten years, cost the lives of about 11,000 badgers and cost taxpayers £50 million. It concluded that killing badgers could actually increase the spread of bTB, making matters worse rather than better. It said, "badger culling can make no meaningful contribution to cattle TB control in Britain."

“I don't think animals are more important than humans but I believe that you can oppose badger culling and still have strong views and take actions on economic and other political matters.
Also, while badger culling may provide jobs for marksmen, it has not been shown to be effective. Badgers who are disturbed by the process and seek new setts could re-infect (if they are the source of infection) newly cleared or previously low risk areas. Past pilots have shown that it is difficult to clear an area of all badgers.
Farmers have opposed research into TB vaccinations - WHY? It would be the obvious route - humans are vaccinated, so let's go down that route.”

“by shiftworker - I hope you are able to protect your sett without resorting to the violent means that you hint at,..."

I'm prepared to fight them through the courts to keep them of my land. As for "violence" - they were happy enough for me to fight for a rock in the South Atlantic to protect "their" land, so they should be happy enough for me to fight to protect my land.

In the4 mean time by introducing a feeding programme, and some very sturdy fencing, we are "retraining" the badgers to forage only on our land.

Incidently, the fox hunt (and whatever they claim, they DO still hunt foxes) is also banned from my land.”

“And yes, I think animals are far more important that problems that the human vermin causes itself. A cull of humans would do far more good."

Here here Any_One. Human population needs to be radically controlled but that of cause is a different issue. I hope you are able to protect your sett without resorting to the violent means that you hint at, else I fear it will end in tears for you and a lengthy spell behind bars. Let us all unite to think of a more peaceful solution to this criminal proposal by our government/s. I am as furious as the next man but we should not lose control of our senses. That would just play into their hands.”

“@Dave_Nottm Don't knock someone who cares strongly about something. Although in my view anyone who feels strongly about animal welfare issues shouldn't have voted Conservative in the first place. The Conservatives always have been and always will be the nasty party when it comes to animal welfare.”

“"@Any_One - You think badger control policy is more important than issues like Europe, immigration, education, tax, transport, law & order etc?"

Let me put it this way. I have a badger sett on my land, and if the farmer next door thinks he or anyone else is going to kill my badgers, then they need to think again - unless of course they want to argue with me, my dogs, and my shotgun.

And yes, I think animals are far more important that problems that the human vermin causes itself. A cull of humans would do far more good.”

“How can a so called nature loving society be party to such a murderous act, I can only hope that every creature killed is a nail in the coffin of this and any other political party that supports it and where are the nature activists when you need them.”
