Cow steaks its claim by winning top prize at Christmas cattle auction

FARMERS from across Derbyshire did battle yesterday in the city's cattle market.

They were taking part in the Christmas annual fatstock auction, which allows farmers to showcase their best cattle and sheep ahead of the festive period. Prizes were awarded to those judged be the best in their class.

The event provides farmers with an opportunity to show off their ability to rear a good animal as well auction off their livestock.

Pictured with his prize-winning cow is farmer Paul Weston, who was presented with his winner's rosette by city councillor Mick Baker and is also pictured with buyer Richard Taylor, from Owen Taylor's Butchers, in Alfreton.

One of the farmers attending, John Salt, of Little Eaton, described how fatstock was the highlight of the year for farmers in the county.

He said: "It's when everyone brings their Christmas cattle and sheep, it's like a shop window for Christmas food."
