Patrols have been stepped up across South Derbyshire to clamp down on dog fouling.

Safer neighbourhood wardens are targeting hotspots in Hilton, Hatton, Overseal, Woodville, Newhall and Melbourne.

Since the start of this year 11 complaints have been received about owners not picking up after their pets. In 2011 there were 41 for the whole of the year.

Offenders caught risk a £50 fixed penalty notice.

In addition to extra patrols, pupils at Overseal Primary School have made posters to emphasise the importance of bagging and binning mess, while new signage has been put in place at Newhall Park.

Environmental health manager Matt Holford said: “We recognise the majority of dog owners take pride in South Derbyshire and clear up after their pets. It’s only a small minority of irresponsible owners who are guilty of not clearing up who spoil enjoyment of our parks and open spaces for everyone else.

“Our wardens are committed to investigating all cases of dog fouling and taking action to ensure that the district is a clean and safe place for people to live, work and visit.”

Members of the public are also being encouraged to help combat the problem by reporting offenders.

Anyone wishing to report a problem can contact the wardens by calling 01283 595943 or emailing environmental.health@south-derbys.gov.uk

“You are so right shelley2009 about outside Ridgeway/Gayton schools.
That alleyway is disgusting sometimes! I was dog poo dodging earlier down there!”

“I'd be wary of cracking down on dog mess - likely to be very messy - far better to scoop-up!”

“Any chance they can crack down in Sunnyhill/Littleover - the pavements are disgusting, especially outside Ridgeway/Gayton schools. And calls to Street Pride do nothing to improve the situation.”

“The more that's being done to prevent the dog mess menace the better. It is easy to clean up after your own dog and "pop the drop" into a bin. I only hope that South Derbyshire are really serious about challenging and changing the attitudes of the anti-social people who give their dogs a bad name.”
