Cricket: Derbyshire survive nervous moments to seal win
Derbyshire scored the 73 runs they needed this morning to complete a LV County Championship victory over Surrey at the County Ground.
But it wasn't quite a flawless passage to the 19 points as they lost three more wickets before securing a five-wicket win at 220-5.
Dan Redfern was first out for 17 when he clipped a Chris Jordan ball off his legs and gave a simple catch to Andre Nel at midwicket at 166-3.
Three overs later, Wavell Hinds was deceived by leg-spinner Chris Schofield and caught behind for nine as he looked to cut to make it 183-4.
Steve Stubbings was the foundation of the Derbyshire innings but he fell for 83 when he was bowled by Schofield trying a paddle-sweep at 192-5, with 26 still needed. That was Stubbings' highest Championship score in almost two years.
Greg Smith (27 not out) and Jamie Pipe (eight not out) were left to get the winning runs five minutes before lunch.
It was only the 19th time Derbyshire had beaten Surrey in a first-class game in 137 meetings since 1883.
