Cricket: Madsen earns a draw for Derbyshire
Wayne Madsen earned Derbyshire a draw with an unbeaten 108 after they were set 349 to win on the final day of their LV County Championship match against Surrey at Whitgift School.
It was the opener's second century in only four Championship matches for the county and steered Derbyshire to 232-5 at the close, with Freddie Klokker 32 not out.
Surrey declared on 320-4, with Mark Ramprakash 134 not out, to give themselves 77 overs to try to bowl Derbyshire out but that also left plenty of time for the away side to get the runs on a quick-scoring ground.
However, Chris Rogers was caught down the leg side off the first ball of the innings, from Andre Nel, and Garry Park was caught at backward short leg in the final over before lunch to leave Derbyshire struggling on 30-2.
Madsen and Greg Smith provided stability with a partnership of 90 before Smith was caught at point for 49.
Usman Afzaal was brought into the attack shortly before tea and with his third ball he had Wavell Hinds caught at short leg for eight at 153-4.
Nel produced a savage five-over burst after tea and had Dan Redfern caught at second slip at 170-5 but Madsen and Klokker survived 86 minutes to add 62 in 27 overs and earn the draw.
Madsen faced 226 balls and hit 14 fours in his 108 not out.
Ramprakash was imperious at the start of play as he moved to the 108th century of his career, putting him level in 16th place on the all-time list alongside Zaheer Abbas.
Derbyshire's sole wicket came when Afzaal (85) skied a catch to mid on from the bowling of Graham Wagg, who finished with 3-109, but the pair had added 156 in 25 overs.
