Derbyshire were left needing 218 to win their first home match of the season after getting the better of the third day of their LV County Championship match at the County Ground.

Surrey were bowled out for 360 in their second innings half an hour after lunch and at the close, Derbyshire had progressed steadily to 145-2, with Steve Stubbings 66 not out and Dan Redfern 11 not out. They need 73 more to win.

Garry Park earlier made 50 for Derbyshire to follow career-best first-class bowling figures of 3-25.

Surrey were 213-3 overnight and the second new ball was always likely to be a key time for Derbyshire but they managed to strike twice before it was due.

Night watchman Jade Dernbach drove straight to mid off for six in the third over of the day but the bigger wicket was Usman Afzaal for 59 as he was completely bemused by a Jon Clare slower ball and gave an easy return catch.

The new ball was taken straight away and in its second over, Ian Hunter found the inside edge of Jon Batty's bat and Jamie Pipe took an outstanding one-handed catch low to his left.

Graham Wagg took his first wicket of the innings when Chris Jordan misjudged a leave and lost his off stump at 276-7.

In the last over before lunch, James Benning was tempted into an ill-advised pull at Greg Smith and gave Hunter a simple catch at mid on for 36, leaving Chris Schofield on 17 not out to bat with the tail.

Park finished them off, bowling Andre Nel and Pedro Collins.

Park and Stubbings put on 89 for the first wicket and though Stuart Law was caught at first slip for seven, Derbyshire were in a strong position.
