DERBYSHIRE nominated Tim O'Gorman for the position of the England & Wales Cricket Board's chairman of cricket.

O'Gorman, 42, played 117 first-class and 130 one-day matches for Derbyshire between 1987 and 1996. He scored 5,372 first-class runs including 10 centuries and 28 fifties.

He was a key member of the club's 1990 Sunday League winning side and a crucial contributor with 49 runs in the 1993 Benson & Hedges Cup victory over Lancashire.

Since his retirement in 1996, O'Gorman has remained involved in cricket through his work with the MCC and the Professional Cricketers' Association.

Derbyshire chairman Don Amott said: "Our committee are firm in their belief that a candidate with experience as a professional cricketer should be nominated.

"That coupled with Tim's enthusiasm to do the job makes him, we believe, the perfect candidate.

"Having played the game professionally for almost a decade and being heavily involved in cricket in an off-the-field capacity since then, Tim has all the required knowledge and experience to be a successful chairman of cricket."

Derbyshire head of cricket John Morris added: "Having played in the same Derbyshire team as Tim for many years, and then having continued to see his valuable work with the PCA, I believe him to be an outstanding candidate for the position."

O'Gorman said: "I am delighted that the Derbyshire chairman and committee have chosen to propose me for the position.

"I believe I can do a good job in this role and it is nice to have the backing of the club I used to play for – I really am touched by their support."

Leicestershire County Cricket Club and Kent County Cricket Club have seconded O'Gorman's nomination.
