Derbyshire cricket: Surrey hit back after record stands
Derbyshire's remaining batsmen built a substantial first innings lead in the first session of the second day in their LV County Championship match against Surrey today.
Record stands for the eighth and 10th wickets in matches against Surrey took Derbyshire to 274 all out at lunch, ahead by 143. Greg Smith was 93 not out and Ian Hunter made 47 - only one off his highest score for the county.
It was an astonishing turnaround that changed the nature of the contest after Derbyshire had led by only 21 overnight.
Smith and Graham Wagg saw their side through to the first hour to carry the score to 190-8 before Wagg was lbw to Chris Schofield attempting to sweep. He scored 35 and the stand of 102 knocked a record out of the books which had stood since 1884.
When Mark Lawson was caught behind down the leg side for nought at 191-9, it seemed the end was nigh but Hunter was soon hitting the ball very cleanly.
He was bowled by Pedro Collins to give the West Indian his fifth wicket. Hunter hit eight fours and a six off only 52 balls. Smith's runs were off 133 balls and included 14 fours.
Their stand of 83 for the 10th wicket beat Dominic Cork and Paul Aldred's 1996 record.
Surrey resolved to make a better job of their second innings and opening pair Stuart Newman (46 not out) and Michael Brown (28 not out) batted through the 35 overs of the second session to reach 81-0 at tea.
