HOW THE TWO-DAY STRIKE IS AFFECTING COUNCIL SERVICES ACROSS DERBYSHIRE
PARTICIPATION in the strike varied. At Amber Valley Borough
Council, one in five people took part in the strike while, at
Derbyshire County Council, the figure was 26 per cent. Other
authorities were unable to provide a figure.
This is how the strike has affected council services across
the county -
LEISURE CENTRES Derby: Springwood Leisure Centre – Open as
usual yesterday and today.
Queen's Leisure Centre – Pool was open yesterday morning
because lifeguards turned up but cannot guarantee if the pool
will be open today or what classes will go ahead. People are
being advised to turn up as usual but classes may be cancelled
at the last minute.
Moorways Sports Centre – Open yesterday but some classes
cancelled, including the morning salsa class and aerobics in
the evening. It was unclear which classes would go ahead today
so please ring before attending.
Moorways Swimming Pool – Completely closed. Shaftesbury
Sports Centre – Open as normal yesterday and today.
Amber Valley: The borough's four leisure centres at
Alfreton, Belper, Heanor and Ripley open as normal.
Erewash: Leisure centres open as normal. Derbyshire Dales:
No disruption to leisure centres.
South Derbyshire: Etwall Leisure centre closed but Green
Bank Leisure Centre and Rosliston Forestry Centre open as
usual.
MUSEUMS
In Derby, all art galleries and museums are closed. Buxton
museum was open as normal.
BIN COLLECTIONS
Derby: No bin collections in Derby yesterday because not
enough staff turned up for work. It was not clear what the
situation would be today.
Amber Valley: No disruption to service Erewash: No
disruption to bin collections.
South Derbyshire: The refuse collection service operating as
normal.
Derbyshire Dales: No disruption to the usual service.
LIBRARIES
Derby: All libraries were shut except for Pear Tree and
today all will be shut except Alvaston library, which will have
a limited service. In the remainder of the county, 19 libraries
out of 45 were closed due to the strike action.
INFORMATION and ADMINISTRATION
Derby: Derby's Tourist Information office is closed during
the strike. The main switchboard, Derby 293111, is offering a
limited service to cope with emergency inquiries. Receptions to
all main offices in the city, including the Council House,
Roman House, Saxon House and Middleton House, together with
area offices are also closed.
Amber Valley: The council offices in Ripley are open. The
main reception and switchboard are open but with a limited
service. The council was not able to deal with any housing
benefit or council tax queries The planning reception in the
council offices was open to deal with planning issues. The four
town-centre offices in Alfreton, Belper, Heanor and Ripley are
closed on both days, as is the Tourist Information Centre in
Ripley Market Place.
Erewash: Long Eaton Civic Centre benefits inquiries office
closed at Wednesday at noon instead of the normal time of
4.30pm. It was unclear what the situation would be at the
centre today. The borough council's telephone contact centre is
open for all other inquiries on 08459072244.
Ilkeston Benefits Enquiry Office in Wharncliffe Road is closed
today and the Cash Office will run a limited service until noon
due to the strike. Normal service will resume tomorrow.
South Derbyshire: The Civic Offices are closed. There is a
limited telephone service available at the Civic Offices. The
CareLine telecare support system will provide an emergency
service to people connected to the system.
Derbyshire Dales: No disruption
Derbyshire County Council: The main headquarters in Matlock
were open as usual.
REGISTER OFFICES
There is a statutory obligation for authorities to register
births, marriages and deaths so this function will still be
operating and any weddings organised for the days would go
ahead. However offices will not be open for general
inquiries.
SOCIAL CARE
Derby: Limited services were in place to cover essential
care for people needing home care support.
Remainder of the county: Day care centres were closed but an
essential service was maintained for those who needed it and
was arranged on an individual basis.
SCHOOLS
In the city, there were 32 schools closed, nine partially
closed and across the rest of the county there were a further
57 schools shut to pupils.
