DERBY SHAKESPEARE THEATRE COMPANY MAKE HISTORY WITH NEW ENDING
IN a world where there appears to be a scandal in every classroom and schools are driven by targets, The History Boys raises some interesting observations.
Very well performed by Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company at the Guildhall Theatre, this Alan Bennett play is certainly food for thought.
It is set in the 1980s and involves a group of sixth form boys, a wildly ambitious head teacher who wants them to go to Oxbridge, and the contrasting teaching styles of three teachers.
Throw in a dose of rampant hormones and a whiff of homosexuality and the scene is set for Bennett to alternate between high drama and belly laughs.
The key character is Hector – the teacher whose methods are free and liberal, outside the constraints of the curriculum, and well played by Gordon Gell.
He is happy, occasionally fondling the boys and having them at his beck and call rather like an aging uncle, but this is challenged by the arrival of Irwin, a young graduate who will coach the boys to future success.
Everyone played their part in this production and made for a very credible bunch of pupils.
Anyone familiar with the piece should look out for the alternative ending which creates a more positive note than the original.
