DERBY County could appeal against the severity of the fine slapped on them by the FA following a touchline melee in the match against Nottingham Forest in January.

Both clubs accepted the charge and were fined £35,000 for failing to control their players towards the end of the Championship game at Pride Park Stadium, which the Rams won 1-0.

A further £10,000 suspended penalty was imposed, taking the total fine to £45,000.

The suspended fine had hung over the clubs following the brawl at the end of the game at the City Ground in August.

Derby and Forest have also been warned as to their future conduct.

"We are not prepared to make any statement on the outcome until we have considered our options in relation to appealing against it, which is a course of action open to us. We are also interested to hear in a written explanation how they (the FA) came to their decision," said a Rams spokesman.

Chief executive Tom Glick and head of communications Matt McCann represented Derby at the FA hearing, held at Nottinghamshire County FA yesterday.

Mark Arthur, Forest's chief executive, attended.

He said: "We are surprised at the severity of the fine that has been imposed. We will study the FA's written report before deciding whether or not to appeal."

It is the second time the rivals have been fined this season following skirmishes between their players.

The first was sparked by Forest striker Nathan Tyson when he ran round waving a red corner flag in front of the Derby fans at the end of the Reds' 3-2 home victory.

On that occasion, the FA fined the two clubs for failing to control their players.

Derby received a £20,000 fine, £10,000 of which was suspended.

Forest were fined £25,000, with £10,000 suspended and Tyson was hit with a £5,000 fine and a suspended two-match ban.

Both clubs were warned they will have to pay the suspended sum should they be found guilty of a similar offence again before the end of next season.

The players clashed again in the fixture on January 30.

Members of the coaching staff of both clubs also became involved.

Forest boss Billy Davies later claimed he was kneed in the leg by Rams manager Nigel Clough, who denied the allegation. Clough said if there was any contact in the melee, it was accidental.

Derby are waiting to answer a third FA charge of failing to control their players following a bust-up in the home defeat by Swansea last month.

“ANTYD, REDLAND - And that where youve showed you dont have a clue...take a look at teh footage again if youve seen it at all.

The Swansea player goes flying over and claims Bywater hit him, the linesman laughs at him and tells him to get up.

Id worry about your own club if i was you - WIth bottler Billy going back to Preston (perhaps..he might hide again like he did for his first visit to PP), you still not being able to sign anyone because youve over spent and the potential to lose AGAIN...Billy could have his cases pack quicker than you can say "Hoots Mon..get the NEP on the phone I want to complain"

Youde better hope fior you sake that Swansea get points docked because theyre breathing down your neck for 3rd place”

“The Red One - I havent said anybody was blameless or that Derby didnt do anything in the Forest incidents, both sides were guilty of the same offence and have been punished accordingly and almost equally.

My point was that if you consider the 2 incidents that we were both involved in as justly dealt with or even OTT dealt with then the Swansea clash was even less than that...there was just a bit of pushing between players which happens week after week - no wrestling or grappling like there was between our teams and it was over in a matter of seconds.”

“If Derby County are trying to reduce their debt, they should start controlling their players and coaching staff in an effort to stop receiving these unnecessary fines. I assume it will not come out of their wages.”
