Derby County boss Nigel Clough hails 'incredible' run
NIGEL Clough says the victory over Leeds United is as good a win as Derby County have had this season.
Derby have thumped Watford 5-1, Blackpool 4-1 and beaten Nottingham Forest 1-0 but Clough felt seeing off Leeds 3-1 at Pride Park on Saturday is right up there with the rest.
It was the Rams' eighth successive win against the Yorkshire club.
"Considering the rivalry, and the fact the games are usually very tight, to get eight straight victories is quite incredible," said Clough.
"It is probably as good a win as we have had all season because of the quality and experience of the opposition.
"We went one up but didn't get that second goal during the first half and got pegged back. Leeds came out and put us under pressure at the start of the second half and the response from the players from the hour mark was outstanding.
"We have praised the players this season but they deserve nothing but praise for the performance."
Conor Sammon put Derby ahead after 15 minutes with his fifth goal of the season only for Paul Green, the former Rams midfielder, to equalise on the stroke of half-time.
The goal frustrated Clough.
"We have to cut those little things out," he said.
"A long ball into our box was headed down and we were caught half asleep and conceded to go in at 1-1.
"We knew the goal would give them a massive lift and they came out with a spring in their step for the second half but we saw it through and started playing from there."
Jake Buxton turned in Richard Keogh's shot to put Derby back in front before substitute Ben Davies curled in a fine goal in stoppage time to make the points safe.
Clough was delighted with some of Derby's attacking play.
"We really got at Leeds and it was also nice to get a little break when they hit the post late on with the score at 2-1," he said.
"Our home form is simply outstanding at the moment. One defeat in 11 in the Championship is some effort from the players, and they deserve a huge amount of credit.
"You will not see a group of players who are closer together than this group and that is what gets us through at times.
"That can take us a certain amount of the way and then you need a bit of quality after that but we will take the spirit for now."
