DERBY County are to ask Norwich City about extending the loan stay of striker Chris Martin.

The 24-year-old's one-month loan is due to expire after Saturday's home game against Leicester City.

He made his Rams debut as a substitute in the defeat at Watford and he has started the last three matches against Crystal Palace, Cardiff City and Birmingham City.

"We've been very pleased with his performances so far and we would like to extend his loan," said manager Nigel Clough.

"We will have a chat with Norwich and, hopefully, try and get something sorted to keep him."

Clough describes Martin as an "intelligent" footballer and says the player has been unlucky not to have scored two or three goals in his loan spell.

"Chris knows where the ball is going before it comes to him. He knows what is around him and he has the attributes to play that position well," said Clough.

"He is a handful in the air. He makes it awkward for centre-halves and I don't think a centre-half has had a comfortable header against him since he has come into the team.

"Chris has been very unlucky not to get a goal, you know.

"At Birmingham on Saturday, he was denied by a brilliant save and another shot struck the heel of a defender as he has turned his back.

"He had a goal disallowed at Cardiff that was onside and Julian Speroni pulled off a good save from him when we played Crystal Palace.

"He could easily have had himself a goal or two, or even three.

"Chris is getting into the positions, which is good."

Clough says Martin is also building his match fitness, having played only 15 games this season prior to his loan move to Pride Park.

"It is strange to be saying that in March but one or two players are still doing that, because they haven't played much," said Clough.

"We've got both ends of the spectrum – lads who haven't played enough and lads who have played too much. There are not many in between."

“B4, lets recap this new regime, 5 out of 6 wins and bought no new players in, attendances increased, away support increased, league position improved, youth team in the semi final of the fa youth cup, a better squad than last time we were in the play offs. Now lets look down the A5-2 the Woollies dropping like a stone, attendances diminishing, little away support to talk about anyway, youth team out of fa youth cup, NLN having to play half fit kids to make the numbers up. Laugh I nearly fell off me chair. Got to go it's late and I have to school tomorrow (u plonker) LOLs”

“He seems a good player, I hope he works out then signs up full time at the end of the season.
Problem is we still need at least three more players on loan as well as him.
Do they do emergency loan Managers ?”

“As predictable as wiping your **** after a cr@p, here come the post school home time notts fans.
When I was at school in notts it was fairly engaging and enjoyable but you losers must be counting down the lessons until the bell rings and absolutely wetting your Y- fronts on the way home to your computers.
Andy seems a sound forest fan with a realistic view if football and our own teams but some of you need to get this out your system with some conkers at break time or just go home for a nice relaxing tug before Blue Peter starts.
Now lets recap this weeks history lesson which you clearly bunked off again:
Since when has Billy been a king or a success?
Remember Blackpool and Swansea? I'll let him off for Yeovil ;-)
Remember Billy throwing toys out of the notts pram when he didn't get his own way last time?
Remember him doing this at every club in his career?
Remember forest fans going mad in anger last time he was in charge and the wheels fell off?
Remember not 1 club wanting him until he invented the 'unfinished business' myth when he was unemployed and you were looking for 4th / 5th manager in a year.
As Jarvis Cocker once said, 'Do you remember the first time?'. I think you're still looking for it.”

“BlacknWhite As my good old mate Dale said you have to be in it to win it and you have never been near it with clueless NLN, if we fail atleast our season didn't finish in November, like yours, the only good thing that you can do this weekend is beat the Bin Robbers for us reds, but somehow I cant see it your home form is getting as bad as your away form and thats pathetic.”

“The reports suggest Martin looks a good player...we might be looking at him as someone who could lead the line next season with Ward/someone else, perhaps Clough's realised Sammon's not quite up for the job he wanted him to do but has to stick with him for this season and especially spending way too much money on him.

I agree with a lot of comments on here, goals are important and we need to address that for next season but for the meantime we need someone who can hold the ball up and bring our midfield runners into the game...if Martin can do that job for this season I'll be happy for the short term because we ain't getting a goalscorer on loan at this point of the season!”

“Derwentx - well done Clough getting players fit for the benefit of other teams....

Why mention other strikers....., because we are having to talk about loans because his striker purchases have been poor or they are shipped out, sammon, Robinson, Tyson, macguire...........

I ask you the question, of the players he has bought, which ones have increased in value to raise funds............. Still thinking.”

“Tadley - are those players available on loan now, today? No. So why bother to mention them? The thread is about bringing Martin in on loan, not who we could have signed two years ago. A contributor was criticising the fact that Martin is not a top goal scorer, I was asking the question 'who is available on loan who fits that criteria'? The answer is 'no one'.

Ward cost peanuts and he owes us absolutely nothing so lets not criticise his signing. If he left tomorrow he would have been value for money.

As for Steve Davies he was an injury prone sick-note until Clough sorted him out by bringing him in early for pre-season training. Since then only freak head injuries have kept him out of the side so any progress is has made is down to our manager, not the crew at Bristol. Likewise he made Commons get himself into shape at the same time and by some miracle he lasted a full season.”

“Blacknwhite, I apologise for rednight he didn't mean Yeovil they might be promoted, I think he meant notts clownty the poor mans Nottingham team. LOLs. Whatever happens in the last nine games it is better to be in the mix than end the season after 46 games. I'm not saying we will be successful but we have as much chance as the rest, and looking at the side we have possibly more than some around us? Onwards and upwards with King Billy, 3500 going to hull can't wait!”

“Every forward Clough had brought to the club has not delivered or improved. Ward is far too injury prone, 3 times a season... Funny how Davies has not got injured for Bristol.......”
