In the past, Shorterm has solely specialised in finding engineers to work in the rail industry and manages all the recruitment for train-maker Bombardier's Litchurch Lane site. But the company has started to expand into the aerospace industry.

It is now looking for people to work at companies including Derby-based Gardner Aerospace, which is hoping to fill more than 10 vacancies.

It is also recruiting for Midland Aerospace in Nottinghamshire and two Staffordshire firms – UTC Aerospace and Senior Aerospace.

Shorterm is also looking for sheet metal workers, welders, fabricators and engineers with experience in quality control.

James Couchman, account executive for aerospace at Shorterm, said: "We're working with some of the region's most prestigious aerospace companies.

"But there appears to be a massive skills shortage in CNC machinists – including millers, turners and grinders – and companies are starting to feel this. We have plenty of vacancies across the Midlands and we're hoping that people will come forward to void that gap."

Mr Couchman said the demand for aerospace engineers was being driven by production increasing at Derby aero-engine firm Rolls-Royce and aircraft manufacturers, such as Airbus and Boeing.

He said: "Aerospace is booming at the moment but skilled engineers are proving very difficult to find. There may be people out there who once worked in the industry and fancy a return – or someone who is already in the sector and fancies a change.

"There may be people who are considering leaving their current job but don't want to leave the area. Geographically, all of the positions we have are local."

Shorterm will be holding an Engineering Recruitment Day at its Vernon Gate offices next Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

Anyone interested in making an appointment should call Derby 224540 or e-mail james.couchman@shorterm. co.uk.

“"Shorterm said it had noticed a shortage in skilled engineers and was keen to recruit people from the Derby area who had the required expertise."

Is it only me who sees the contradiction in this statement?

If there is a genuine shortage then it doesn't matter how much you try to recruit, because the required skills are not there. The only way to relieve the shortage is to train more people.”

“Anyone in the business know if a welder is now classed as a "skilled engineer". When I wer' growin' up they woz called welders.

But I note that all of these vacancies are still unfilled, despite the rhetoric of "the immigrants are tekkin all of our jobs".”

“No surprise one or two of these companies are struggling, they may find the people they need if they improve their T&Cs...... simple!”

“Not so much a shortage of these skills - more a case of a shortage of people with the skills that want to use them.”
