THE council house will be plunged into darkness tonight as Derby City Council joins people across the world to take part in Earth Hour.

The event is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature and encourages people to switch off all non- essential lighting to show their support for the development of renewable energy sources.

This year, 152 countries and almost 7,000 towns and cities around the world have signed up to take part and Derby's council house will be in darkness from 8.30pm until 9.30pm tonight.

Councillor Hardyal Dhindsa, cabinet member for planning, environment and public protection, said: "We are switching off the external lights at the Council House because we care passionately about protecting our brilliant planet.

“No doubt they are now trying passionately to stop an extra 172,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the air above our brilliant planet every year ( plus the dioxin which we are supposed to be reducing, not increasing it) from the planned Derbyshire incinerator (to be built in Derby)

The Derbyshire prototype incineration plant in the Isle of wight is to be shut down next year after breaching dioxin limits by 800%. Dioxin is known to cause cancer and birth defects. Yet it is OK to build a polluting, non-working, experimental, high carbon incineration plant in Derby.

In the same year that the Derbyshire incineration plant is planned to be built, the UK Health Protection Agency is to commence studies of birth defects in the vicinity of 'modern' incinerators. How passionately you care about the pregnant women who will be breathing in the dioxin from the Derby incineration plant

    Absolute garbage”

“Renewables do cost more - now.
As it becomes more and more expensive / environmentally damaging to extract fossil fuels then renewables will become more economic.
Once upon a time cars were luxury items, since Henry Ford prices have dropped and now not owning a car is regarded as a factor in the US poverty calculations.
Mass production of solar panels and turbines will lead to price reductions and better and better designs
Already fossil electicity is more expensive than 10 years ago and some countries are allowing shale fuels to be exploited despite massive impact on landscape”
