Derby's new Tesco opens its doors
A NEW city centre supermarket has opened its doors this morning.
Tesco Metro, in the former Marks & Spencer food store in St Peter's Street, opened at 7am and within three-and-a-half hours around 1,200 people had already been through the tills.

Store manager David Harman said the morning had been a big success.
"It's been really good because everybody seems excited about the opening," he said.
"Hopefully we can help to regenerate an area of Derby which many have said is starting to die with the opening of the Westfield Centre."
The store was officially opened at 10am by members of Derby Lions, who were given a £1,000 donation for their Christmas appeal.
The campaign, supported by the Evening Telegraph, invites schoolchildren to collect food for people in need across the city.
Customer Janet Bamford, 57, of Penzance Road, Alvaston, welcomed the new store.
She said: "It will be very convenient and we've been without something like this in Derby for quite a while.
"A lot of people who work in the city will find it easier to do shopping particularly in the morning before they start work.
"I don't usually go to Tesco but because it's here I'll definitely get used to it."
Julie Blackwell, 35, of Field Lane, Chaddesden said: "I work in the Cornmarket and Tesco is much easier to get to than other places.
"I've had a look round this morning and it seems to be selling everything which is great."

“Initially prices may be artificially low, to get people into the habit of shopping in the city centre. It will be interesting to see if prices will be as they are in the out of city supermarkets, or will they attract a city premium over and above the increased prices experienced in Tesco Metro stores?”

“M&S have lost out here! Another example of senior managers (who are out of touch), who think they know what's best, actually knowing very little and not listening to the public. Take heed HSBC around the corner, who have got rid of paying-in windows and confusing the hell out of everyone after replacing people with machines.”

“I am really pleased tesco has opened in this location, Marks and Spencer used to be so handy to nip into after work on my way to the bus stop, but I dont want to trek all the way to the other side of westfield centre to nip in for a few bits. Spar's quite close I suppose but I find it a bit pricey.
Hopefully it will be good for that side of town as well.”
