DERBYSHIRE will be ready to gamble in the final month of the season if it gives them a chance of winning promotion from Division Two of the LV County Championship.

The draw at Edgbaston leaves Derbyshire 23 points behind Warwickshire in the second promotion place with three games to play.

The first of them is at home to Glamorgan, starting tomorrow (10.30am). That will be followed by matches against the other two of the bottom three – Gloucestershire at home and Leicestershire away.

Promotion is still a possibility but head of cricket John Morris knows that realistically, his side needs to win at least two of their final three matches to have a chance.

"If we can win a couple of them, we can put ourselves in the melting pot," he said.

"I think if we got to the point now where we had to be prepared to lose a game to try and win it we might have to do that and take a bit of a gamble.

"We've been able to put ourselves in this position going into the last three games of the season and it's nice to be in the hunt. If we had a go at winning a game and it didn't work out and we lost it, at least we had a go to try and win it.

"There will always be a point in the game where you can say 'this is where we have to nail it' and when we have had those opportunities in recent games we have taken them."

Morris was cheered by another solid performance on a flat wicket against Warwickshire which keeps Derbyshire's chances alive.

"We wanted the win, of course but I don't think that was possible on that wicket and we came back from Edgbaston unscathed, if you like," he added.

"We picked up 11 points and we're still right in there.

"Warwickshire have got Worcester next and Essex – they are tough games."

Derbyshire could be boosted by the return of Tom Lungley to the bowling attack, while wicketkeeper Jamie Pipe may also be back from injury to face Glamorgan.
