Derbyshire took a first innings lead of 19 on

the third day of their LV County Championship match which was

decidedly attritional.

Paul Nixon and Tom Smith, who saw out the last 11 overs of the

previous night to take their side to 117-6, survived a

further 35 overs in a seventh-wicket stand of 73 before

their side was bowled out for 189 shortly after lunch.

At tea, Derbyshire had edged along to 47-1, an overall lead of

66.

Nixon was in particularly belligerent mood, taking 36 balls to

move from 10 to 11 and not scoring a boundary until the 109th

ball he faced.

He was finally out for 26, made off 135 balls with two

fours.

After the stand was broken at 177-7, Graham Wagg took two more

wickets and Charl Langeveldt one to leave both Derbyshire

bowlers with four wickets in the innings.

Smith finished 47 not out, made off 170 balls with four

fours.

Derbyshire also decided to dig in their heels as opening pair

Chris Rogers and Jake Needham, sent up the order because Dan

Birch was ill, took the score on to 38 in the 15th over.

Then Rogers got a rising ball from Garnet Kruger he could do

little about and was caught behind for 20.
