Derbyshire scrape past follow-on target on third day of LV Championship match
DERBYSHIRE scraped past the follow-on target as Simon Jones continued to wreak havoc on the third morning of the LV County Championship match at New Road.
The former England bowler, whose three-wicket blast with the second new ball put Derbyshire back in trouble yesterday, added a fourth victim with the first ball of the day and a fifth in his next over to complete a spell of 5-17 in 27 balls.
Tom New was first to go for 11 as a leading edge looped for Vikram Solanki to take an easy catch at mid off and when Graham Wagg was lbw to Jones, Derbyshire were 290-8, still 11 short of the total they needed to avoid being asked to bat again.
But Kevin Dean clipped a two off his legs to take Derbyshire beyond 301 and though Jon Clare was caught at second slip by Graeme Hick off Gareth Andrew for 22, a useful last-wicket stand of 31 between Dean (25) and Charl Langeveldt (20 not out) lifted them to 343, trailing by 107.
By lunch, Worcestershire had taken their second innings total to 33-0, with Daryl Mitchell 21 not out and Stephen Moore nine not out.
