FOURTEEN homes may be built on the site of a derelict Ilkeston petrol station which has already been the subject of a planning inquiry.

Marshgate Properties, of Lincoln, wants to develop the land in Wharncliffe Road and has submitted an application to Erewash Borough Council.

In 2007, Bob Reilly Developments proposed building 24 apartments there but the council's planners said the development would look out of place and rejected it.

The company appealed but a Government inspector supported the original ruling, saying it would "cause significant harm to the character and appearance of the area".

In a statement to the council on the latest proposal, the applicant's agent, Ryland Design Services, said: "The site is currently a derelict filling station and garage, therefore its removal in itself will have a positive contribution to the area.

"The new dwellings will be in line with the developed form of the area."
