PEOPLE across the county will have the chance to become an archaeologist on the High Peak Trail later this year.

Volunteers are sought to take part in an archaeological dig at the Sheep Pasture incline between November 1 and 2.

The project, between the old track bed of Cromford and the High Peak railway, aims to unearth the remains of an old engine house that was made redundant in the 1850s.

Derbyshire County Council's countryside service has joined forces with researchers from Sheffield University to organise and supervise the dig.

"This is an exciting opportunity to get involved in unearthing some local history," said Brian Lucas, the council's cabinet member for environmental services.

"We do not know what to expect or what might be found once we start to dig."

The project will take place from 10.30am to 3pm on both days.

It costs £5 per day to take part for ages 17 and over.

Steel-toe capped or Wellington boots should be worn, along with suitable clothing.

Places for the dig can be booked by calling 01629 823204.
