A PARACHUTIST fractured his leg when he landed badly during a display at Duffield Carnival.

The 24-year-old man, who was a member of the Royal Artillery's Black Nights parachute display team, fractured his lower leg when he landed heavily at the event in Eyres Meadow on Saturday, at about 5.15pm.

Members of Derby Mountain Rescue Team, who were at the carnival, were first on the scene to give the man first aid.

A GP and a nurse, who were part of the crowd, also offered their assistance. Rescue team members put the man's injured leg in a splint and placed him in a vacuum mattress, in case he had suffered a spinal injury.

The man was taken to Derby City General Hospital by ambulance.
