A DOCTOR could be struck off the register after allegedly failing to assess patients properly before prescribing medicines.

Dr Rakesh Singh, a GP at All Saints' Surgery, in Burton, is being investigated by the General Medical Council over his treatment of two patients.

He allegedly issued 12 prescriptions for a number of different treatments without either carrying out the proper health checks first, making a complete record of what he had done, or both.

In the case of the first patient, 10 prescriptions have been called into question, including a steroid cream, several types of antibiotics and tablets for asthma and arthritis.

On one occasion, it is claimed he prescribed double the standard dose of antibiotics without making a record of why this was necessary.

The first prescription was issued in October 2004 and the last in May 2007.

The second patient was allegedly given antibiotics and an inhaler on two separate occasions in May 2007 without being given a proper examination.

In July the following year, it is claimed that Dr Singh wrote to the local NHS and dishonestly stated that he had examined the patient before prescribing the treatment.

A spokesman for the General Medical Council said that, if the allegations were proven, Dr Singh could be struck off, suspended or allowed to continue working but with certain conditions attached.

A panel is conducting a hearing in Manchester. It is set to deliver its findings next month.
