Dog-walker is saved from ice by teenagers
QUICK-THINKING youngsters have been praised for helping to rescue a dog-walker who had plunged through thin ice into a freezing lake.
The woman had been trying to save her dog, which had run out across the frozen surface of the boating lake at Markeaton Park, on Saturday afternoon.
But the ice gave way and she fell in.
Steve Bainbridge, crew manager at Kingsway fire station, which attended the scene at about 3.20pm, said the incident could have been "a lot worse" were it not for the actions of a group of nearby youngsters.
He said: "There were about half a dozen of them and they were quite a young bunch. They acted very quickly and threw her a life ring which had been attached to a post nearby.
"They were then able to pull the woman towards the shore and help her get out. It was a very brave thing to do."
He said that when crews arrived on the scene, the woman was out of the water.
He said the woman had been taken to the Royal Derby Hospital and, though she was very cold, was not seriously hurt.
Firefighters used an inflatable raft to go out onto the ice and rescue the dog, which was in a "good condition".

“i am the mother of one of the teenagers that rescued that lady and her dog,if it wasn't for their quick thinking and actions we could of been reading a different headline that day.while others stood and phoned for the the emergency services they took it in to their own hands and saved the lady from the freezing cold water, then one of the lads ran across the ice to get the dog that had swam over to the island in the middle he sat holding it until help arrived....its such a shame that some thing as heroic as this can be overshadowed by some fools comments....well i think i speak for all the lads mums and dads...well done we are so proud of what you did that day as im sure the lady was as well.....you deserve credit where credits due.....xxxx”

“The lads that rescued the woman were from Mackworth. Three lads aged 14 years old, I hope the DET pick up from this and commend them for their heroic deed. One of the lads is the son of my sister-in-laws friend. Well done, Master Beresford of Mackworth.”

“How fortunate that there were some quick thinking children around who acted in a sensible and well planned manner.
Green_Roads you should not pre-judge these children by suggesting that they may have been doing what you apparently seem to think is a normal activity on a park. As others have pointed out, not everyone is like you, these kids were probably just enjoying the open air, playing football or walking across the park.
The children in this case are a credit to all young people - well done! You deserve all the praise and credit that is due to you.”

“Thanks for the kind comment on my pictures Welsh invader and little moaner. Theres my pleasure right there!! I'm not easily offended by insults over the internet, these kind of people need to get their kicks from somewhere and what better place than behind there keyboard lol. The secret is not to stoop too low to their level!
Back on topic to the story......
If I'd of actually been there, I wouldn't have thought twice about rescuing the people in distress, I'm a animal lover so no doubt I'd have got the dog first ha ha. My wife would have been given the camera to get the snaps!
Welsh Invader. I have been to Mercia Marina. I didn't like it! Too new for my liking so I'll pay a visit in 5 years time when the place has matured a bit, it seems very bare, almost lifeless for my liking. Do you host the pictures you take, Welsh Invader? Like flickr or Panoramio??”
