Eviction case family are told they can stay for Christmas
A FAMILY, who are being evicted from their home of 22 years, have been told they can stay until after Christmas.
Sarah Daniels, 33, is appealing against Derby Homes' decision to move her on. She said she was relieved at being allowed to stay while the case is reviewed by city councillors.

The council house, in Spencer Street, Alvaston, was the home of Sarah's mother Janet Nicholas, who died of cancer in July, aged 65. She was the only registered tenancy holder and Derby Homes, which manages and maintains houses on behalf of Derby City Council, said that means Ms Daniels, her two children and her brother must now leave.
Despite a 200-strong petition calling for a U-turn, drawn up by other residents in the street who want the family to stay, Derby Homes has informed her that the decision to evict still stands.
It says that because neither Ms Daniels, 32, nor her brother have lived in the property for the entire 12 months prior to their mother's death, they are not eligible to be registered on the tenancy.
Alvaston councillor Alan Graves, who met the city council's cabinet member for housing Philip Ingall to discuss the issue, said: "The children were worried about where they would spend Christmas. I'd like to thank Councillor Ingall for his compassion."

“I was tossing and turning tonight worrying about this poor family being turfed out of a home they've been living in for almost a year and then I had a moment of pure inspiration...
Why don't derby homes charge this family the full market rate for renting a house in that area? That way they could use the money to pay for another (more deserving) family to move from a hostel into maintained, subsidised housing?
Everyone is happy”

“"There is insufficient housing due to the governments policy of selling council homes" - How WillCroft3? The hom estill exists, merely the ownerships has changed. If the council had been demolishing them, I may have agreed. If they had not been sold how would the situation have been different?
Er142938 - As I understand it, it has not been their home for 22 years, it was their mother's home for 22 years. That is materially different.”

“Derny Homes probably need it so they can meet their quota of immigrants found homes this year despite the fact they have never paid a penny into council coffers.
Too many box tickers and not enough brain cells throughout councils and government.”

“Peoples comments on here are ridiculous. this is their home, it has been their home for 22 years. why move good people out who respect the home and the neighbours. its disgusting on behalf of derby homes to do this. i understand they may feel that if they let the rules slide for one they have to do it for everyone. but they should review each case individually and see that this family deserve to live there.”

“Will.... Unfortunately, the council do not have a duty to provide housing, but your point raises an interesting question. What does this say about a society that allows two children to be made homeless less than six months after they lost their Grandmother? How much trauma do they need in their young lives?”

“There is insufficient housing due to the governments policy of selling council homes and not building new homes to replace the ones they have sold.
In My opinion; They should STOP SELLING council homes, until the stocks have recovered, and perhaps review the situation in 4 or 5 years time.
The council have a duty to provide vulnerable families with homes, whether YOU RIGHT WING extremists like it or not.”

“"The root of the problem is that there is insufficient available housing stock, due to the influx of people into Derby."
Should read
"The root of the problem is that there is insufficient available housing stock, due to people believing they have a god given right to subsidised housing."”

“What you needed to do anopinion83 was complain to your local newspaper, have a sorry picture of you taken, and then have four news stories printed out about you.”

There are rules and they should be followed by all.
Have you thought of getting a job as a traffic warden? You would seem ideally qualified - brain out - common sense out - blindly follow meaningless rules.”
