AT first glance, the group of people moving in time to the music on the dance floor of Derby's SYN nightclub look like pretty average revellers.

But on closer inspection the crowd are all wearing trainers, the dance is actually an aerobic routine, and all are swigging from bottles of water rather than anything stronger.

Welcome to the latest fitness craze to hit Derby – Funky Club Fitness, which aims to give the traditional exercise class a 21st-century twist by taking it out of the gym and into the nightclub.

The idea is the brainchild of fitness instructors Jon Leonard and Lisa-Marie Zbozen, and with more than 60 people turning up for the first class this week, it is already proving a hit in the city.

Mr Leonard, 28, of Alvaston, said: "People love going to nightclubs and they love the loud music – this idea is all about having fun but keeping fit at the same time.

"Most gyms charge around £50 a month membership whether you use it or not. We charge £4 per class and people can just come along when they want.

"The response to the first night was awesome and we're really hoping it's something we can expand in the future."

The classes start with a warm-up before moving on to circuit and punch bag routines, with music from a live DJ.

The sessions are suitable for people of all fitness levels, with everyone working at their own pace.

Hayley Fuller took part in the first Funky Club Fitness session – and will be back.

The 26-year-old, of Abbey Street, said: "I don't really do regular exercise but I like going out and having a dance and this sounded a bit different.

"Because it's dark in the club you don't feel as self conscious as you would do in a gym and the music is very motivating."

Also at the launch night was 19-year-old Marc Thrasivoulou, of Shelton Lock.

He said: "The music was great – it really gets you going. I was surprised at the range of people there."

The sessions take place at SYN nightclub, in Colyear Street, every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6pm to 7pm. For more details, visit funkyclub fitness.com or call 07896081552.
