A FAMILY friend took on the Dublin Marathon to raise money for the Children's Liver Disease Foundation.

Richard Bowcut, 40, always wanted to run a marathon before he was 40. He chose the Dublin Marathon because it was just one week before the milestone.

Richard, who also lives in Ockbrook, said: "I knew I was going to be doing the marathon and if I was going to do it I wanted to make it for a great cause too.

"My children go to the same school as little Alice – Redhill Primary – and I knew about her illness with her liver.

"So I spoke to Jo and Matthew about what I wanted to do and they were honoured."

Richard started training with four months to go before the big day. But 12 weeks before the start, he suffered a groin strain, putting his training back.

He said: "I had to have physiotherapy to get back to full strength and it took a while before I was running properly again.

"But I got round the course in one piece. I completed the 26.2 miles in 4.13 hours. I wanted a sub-four hours marathon under my belt, but you can't have everything.

"I did it and raised some money for a great cause in the process."

Jo said the whole family was overwhelmed by Richard's fund-raising.

She said: "It was an amazing thing Richard did and we are so thankful.

"It's only a small charity and not many people know about it so it helps raise their profile too. It relies on people doing fund-raising to carry on its vital research into finding a cure.

"We can't thank Richard enough for his efforts."
