Maria, who moved to London in 2007 and is currently touring nightclubs with Zoo magazine, said: "It feels really good.
"I'm above the likes of Cheryl Cole, which is really strange. I think people are voting for me because I'm the underdog – it's mainly celebrities who get on these lists."
Maria says her success has led her to being recognised in Derby when she visits her mother, who lives in Hilton.
And she said she hoped her modelling career will help her become a television presenter.
"That's always been my dream," she said.
