Festive fun planned for Derbyshire this weekend
Another two days of festive fun is on the cards this weekend across Derbyshire.
St Mary's Church, in Wirksworth, will be holding a decorated Christmas Tree Festival over the weekend.
There will be lots of trees, sponsored by local businesses and individuals and decorated in imaginative ways, depicting aspects of life in Wirksworth.
The church will be open each day from 10.30am until 5pm to look around the church and the trees and light refreshments will be available. There will be an opening concert on Friday, at 7pm, when Wirksworth Community Choir will be singing carols with the community.

Tickets for this event will cost £4 for adults, £2 for children and a family ticket is £10. After the concert, refreshments will be served and then an opportunity to enjoy the display of decorated trees. On Saturday, The Mam Torists and members of Wirksworth Music Centre will provide the entertainment with live music and there will be children's Christmas craft activities on offer, including decorating a tree.
The Christmas Tree Festival will officially finish on Monday the 17th December, but the trees will stay in the church over the following festive week.
Derbyshire's heritage railways are all offering Santa Special rides again this weekend starting with the opportunity to join Father Christmas and his helpers for a festive time on board one of Ecclesbourne Valley Railway's Santa Specials with a chance to see Santa in his on-board grotto plus a present for the children, a mince pie and something warming for the adults. Santa specials depart from Wirksworth for the 'North Pole' at 11:15am and 2:15pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Midland Railway near Ripley is offering a Santa's grotto on the train and the chance to meet Santa during the ride, with a gift for every child while every adult receives a mince pie and a miniature bottle of spirits. The Pinxton Puppets will also be putting on a show in a heated marquee at the station.
Peak Rail in Rowsley, near Matlock, invites children to join Santa as he boards his festive steam train for a truly wonderful start to the festive season. As you chuff merrily along, Santa assisted by his elves, will take a stroll through the train bearing quality gifts, sweets and a drink for every boy and girl.
Mums, Dads and other family members can sit back and relax with a glass of hot mulled wine and a mince pie whilst enjoying the professional entertainers. All Santa Trains depart from Rowsley South Station only at: 10:45am, 12:15pm, 1:45pm and 3:15pm and fares for the event are adults and senior citizens £10.00, children 0 - 15 Months (No Seat) £5.50, children 16 months up to 15 years £9.00.
Father Christmas will also be dropping in to Poole's Cavern, near Buxton this weekend where you can pay him a visit inside his real limestone cavern grotto while exploring the caverns, illuminated for the festive season. Tickets cost £5 per person, to include a present from Father Christmas, a visit to Poole's Cavern and a drink in the Cavern Café but pre booking is essential. St John’s Church on Buxton Road in Ashbourne, is offering two different concerts this weekend. Ashbourne singers and the Young Ashbourne Singers are holding a Christmas concert on Saturday. The concert starts at 7pm with mulled wine and mince pies included in the ticket price of £8 per adult, under 18's free. On Sunday, Ashbourne Town Band will perform their Christmas Concert starting at 3pm. The concert is family friendly and audience members can expect a visit from Father Christmas. Admission is £5 and also includes mince pie and a drink.
Buxton’s monthly Book Fair takes place on Saturday at the Octagon Hall in the Pavilion Gardens. Traders will be selling books suitable for all the family, with fresh stock each month. A perfect opportunity to pick up a present for someone who loves a good read.
At noon on Saturday La Tierra Flamenco will be holding Flamenco workshops in the ballroom at The Fishpond in Matlock Bath followed by an evening of Fantastic Flamenco to raise much needed funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. During the day the Flamenco Workshops will include sessions for children, beginners and advanced dancers; 12-12.45pm children £3.50, 1-2pm beginners £5, 2.15-3.30pm advanced £7.50. From 7pm there will be a fantastic showcase of La Tierra Flamenco with guest appearances by accomplished dancers from all over the UK. Tickets to the evening performance are £5.50 per person.
There will be a Christmas Shoppers Pamper Day at Belper Natural Health Centre between 10am and 4pm on Saturday. Shoppers will be able to relax with a 30 minute session of reflexology followed by 30 minutes of aromatherapy for only £20, but sessions have to be booked in advance by calling 01773 820220.
The Grand Pavilion in Matlock Bath will play host to a Christmas Market on Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 5pm.There will be a range of stalls to help you choose that Christmas present for someone special. Stalls will include jewellery, books, bags, scarves, handmade pens and clocks, clothing and accessories, perfumes and bath fizzers, picture frames, toys, cards and many more. Face painting and Santa's Grotto for children and a cafe selling tea, coffee and light snacks is available throughout the market day.
Christ Church in Belper is another of Derbyshire’s churches holding a Christmas Tree festival from Friday to Sunday with a host of decorated trees and refreshments available, with Saturday lunches from 11am to 2pm and Sunday afternoon tea between 2pm and 5pm.
You could visit Haddon Hall, near Bakewell, on Saturday or Sunday to enjoy a magical Christmas story with Santa and his naughty elf and after, meet Father Christmas and receive a gift. Suitable for children aged 2 to 10. Performances will be in the State Bedroom at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 3.00pm. Cost is £5.00 per child (in addition to the admission fee).
The Mickleover Singers are holding a Christmas concert entitled "In Heaven The Bells Are Ringing" in St. John's Church, Devonshire Drive, at 7.30 pm on Saturday. Tickets are £6 and are available on the door.
The Dalesmen Male Voice Choir is holding its annual Christmas family musical concert on Saturday evening at St Peter’s Church in Belper. Derwent Brass and the Potter School Choir will also be performing from 7pm.
The Yeah Ducks are returning to the Fishpond in Matlock Bath on Saturday night with a free concert in the bar. The band never fail to entertain an audience with their unique renditions of well known hits.
Babbling Vagabonds Storytelling Theatre present their version of The Brothers Grimm at the Grand Pavilion in Matlock Bath on Saturday evening. One stormy night we join the infamous two brothers, Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm on their quest to find words and stories. Sheltering in an old barn the brothers try and dry out their manuscript and in doing so the words and stories come to life and we revisit some of the stories they have collected on their travels. The audience will be treated to stories that are familiar to them and some of the lesser known stories of the Grimm collection. Suitable for children aged 4 to 104! And last but not least, there will be a street Nativity in Bakewell from 2.30 to 3.30pm on Sunday. This will tell the Christmas Story via a walking 'tableau'. Carols will be sung as the procession moves around the town. The procession will begin at All Saints and end with the blessing of the ABC Crib in Bath Gardens at 15.30.
