Finding the right personal trainer course
(Advertising feature)
Working as a personal trainer can be hugely rewarding and a great way to make a living. However, in recent years the industry has become pretty competitive so before you set out on your own and start looking for clients, it’s essential that you make sure you have the right qualifications. Whether you decide to partner up with a gym or work entirely independently, without the right credentials you’re going to find it difficult to build up a client base.
The first thing to bear in mind is that before you start training as a personal trainer you’ll need to have completed a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification which should be accredited by the relevant professional bodies – CYQ or Active IQ. Once you have completed this basic level of training you can start looking at Level 3 Personal Trainer courses which is the minimum requirement if you want to work as a personal trainer.
Broadly speaking there are two types of personal trainer courses you can look at once you’ve completed your Level 2 qualification. The first type of course is known as a Vocationally Related Personal Trainer Qualification and is probably the most popular option as the courses tend to be shorter in duration. This type of course will help you develop your knowledge in a specific area of health and fitness. The second type of course is called the National Vocational Personal Trainer Qualification and this type of course is geared towards trainers who already have a job or work experience within the industry. If you decide to do this course, it will assess your skills and competencies as a working personal trainer and help you identify areas where you could improve.

Whatever type of course you choose it’s important to check that it is actually recognised by one of the awarding bodies in the health and fitness industry – if not, your qualification won’t be worth the paper it’s written on! If you think you might like to work abroad at some point then it’s definitely worth looking at personal trainer courses that are recognised by the CYQ (Central YMCA). This is an internationally recognised qualification and means you can work almost anywhere once you have the right work permit.
Being a personal trainer is a great job – it’s time to get qualified!
