THE East Midlands station for the new High Speed Two rail route should be at the region's airport, Amber Valley MP Nigel Mills has said.

Government plans see the route for the 225mph trains run near Derby and Nottingham, with a station planned for Toton Sidings.

Derby City Council's Labour leader Paul Bayliss has said the authority will fight to have the station in the city as this is where he says it would have the most economic value.

But Tory opposition leader Philip Hickson said the suggestion was "absurd" and that such a route would see some of the city's better housing demolished.

Tory MP Mr Mills has said he believes putting a line through Derby would be difficult and that a new East Midlands Airport station would be a better idea than Toton.

At present, the Government is planning to put the route under the airport using a tunnel.

Mr Mills said: "Why do that when you could just put the station there? Connectivity by road from the airport is already good."

    “To DerbyBorn

Stupid is a strong word. If it is stupid why did the HS2 company spend a long time surveying and analysing different routes for the new line - one of which was using the existing rail corridor through Derby. Have a look at this document - https://http://tinyurl.com/avfap3d - you may learn something.

Not many properties would need to be demolished although bridges along the route will need to be rebuilt and a new station built. Compare with the amount of properties in Long eaton that will need to be knocked down.

I have said if before on other posts but I don't think many people realise how close Derby was to having the route through the City.

As for the location of the station, it it's not in Derby then to me it makes sense to have it by the airport. There are two reasons I think that the airport wasn't chosen. 1. the airport doesn't have any real rail links as the parkway station otherwise known as the waste of space station is too far away and they would have to rebuild the existing network to reach it; and 2. that the airport is too far away from Nottingham. For me Toton is just not right - a sort of nowhere place and as such the East Midlands won't get the maximum benefits that HS2 could provide.

East Midlands Airport with a new interchange station is the strategic option (like Birmingham and Manchester Airports) so why did the planners to really consider this option? Maybe because the East Midlands isn't that important to the HS2 scheme and not many trains will actually stop at the station at all.”

“What is wrong with just extending the existing East Midlands Parkway Station, which is just a stone's throw from EMA anyway?”

“At least £30 billion pounds. Probably double by the time it is finished. The case for it at all in a small island is not clear to me. Time savings of a lot less than an hour! This will probably be cancelled out by greater security. Saving billions by upgrading existing lines is surely an option worth revisiting. The channel tunnel was an alternative to a boat not a slower train! Time to think and reflect carefully.”

“What a great idea! Even further away from both Derby and Nottingham. Idiot.”

“Stupid to think it could be in Derby City. It is a high speed route and bends and points would restrict the speed. Loads of properties would have to be demolished to make the route. Pie in the sky.
    Focus on what is practical.”

“it doesnt matter where the station is. Whether its Toton, Derby, Nottingham, the airport or in Richard the thirds buiral site. Unless a new fast way of getting to the station from all three east midlands citys is built along side it (with time tables to match the HS2 departure times by a minute or two), then its pointless anyway as you will be quicker to go by the exisiting rail network, or teleport or go by hovercar or what ever else has been invented in 20 odd years time.”

“First sensible option I've heard on the subject ot date. Anyone who can afford the train tickets will easily be able to afford a taxi from the airport to their final destination and the airport might get a passenger boost too I would think.”
