Foxy visitors like jam sandwiches
ON the subject of urban foxes, ("They're doing the foxtrot", Telegraph, April 16) I am pretty sure that at least two of them visit my house every night.
I have been feeding foxes at the top end of Littleover Lane for three or four years and they are so intelligent.
I put their food on my driveway three or four times a week, or even more as they come to rely on you as their sole source of food.
On several occasions, they have taken the plastic tray, with the food on it, off to their den, and then I have to find yet another tray.
But one night recently, the fox ate the food on the driveway and then picked up the empty tray and took it across the road to a large, detached house, presumably thinking that by leaving it there, it would encourage the owner to leave food out.
When I have no meat or fish remains, the fox is quite happy to eat a cut-up slice of bread, butter and jam, as most foxes have a sweet tooth.
When I lived at the bottom end of Whitaker Road, my wife had made a large batch of damson jam and had a huge sticky mass of stones. We put these out and, much to our surprise, the fox ate the lot and, over the next two nights, left us with damson stone "messages" to mark his territory.
Urban foxes are fascinating creatures and I do implore more people to look out for them and put out food occasionally.
