CHIEF executive Tom Glick has defended the sale of Derby County striker Rob Hulse.

Hulse's move to Queen's Park Rangers, where he will sign a three-year deal, was still to be ratified by the Football League late last night.

The fee for the 30-year-old is undisclosed.

Derby have dismissed reports coming out of London that the fee is £400,000 rising to £800,000 and I understand they will receive around £750,000 rising to well over £1m depending on how the player and Rangers fare this season.

Hulse and Luke Varney, who has joined Blackpool on a season-long loan, have left Pride Park in the past week and Glick has confirmed that the Rams' wage bill is about where they want it to be at just below £10m.

But he says it remains one of the highest in the Championship.

The decision to sell Hulse, who has been the club's leading scorer in the past two seasons, has not gone down well with some fans who believe the club's owners should loosen the purse strings and show more ambition when it comes to signing players.

On Hulse, Glick said: "We had an offer for Rob that came in late.

"We presented it to the manager (Nigel Clough) and coaching staff and they made the judgement from a football stand-point that this was an offer that was right to accept.

"We are conscious he has been our leading scorer in the past two seasons but the things Nigel and his team would be thinking about is that Rob will be 31 in a few weeks and has got nine months to go on his contract.

"All this would have been taken into account in terms of whether Rob would be a player for the future of the club or whether it was right to make a change.

"The decision has been made that somebody else is going to be the target man to take us to that next step and this is the right time to part ways.

"Of course, we expected a backlash to the sale but, ultimately, we have the same objectives as the supporters – to compete for the play-offs, for promotion, to win promotion and to stay up in the Premier League.

"We owe it to them to have the discipline and strength of our convictions, and the manager, the coaching staff and the scouting team are more than capable of making the right recruiting decisions.

"We have the same objectives as the supporters and all the decisions we are making are being based on those objectives.

"But we have to have some budget discipline and that is where you get the separation, because some supporters would rather you spare no expense, gamble and go for it.

"I think there are too many examples showing that strategy doesn't work."

Glick said Derby will do business when the window for emergency loans opens on Tuesday.

"There are going to be more and better players available, because of the Premier League's 25-man squad rule," added Glick.

"We are after a couple of specific targets.

"I think if we had a fit squad, questions about loosening the purse strings would not be coming up.

"The question is more apt when we have a number of guys carrying injuries but they are not serious injuries, apart from Steven Davies.

"We have a temporary injury problem but the squad is not as lean as it seems at the moment.

"Nigel wants to run a tight squad. He wants to have all the players engaged and with a chance of getting in the side.

"I think we have shown a willingness to invest in the squad.

"We continue to run one of the highest wage bills in the League. We have brought in eight players this summer, investment has been made in this window and we have spent quite a bit of money on Alberto Bueno. He is not an inexpensive player."

Glick said Derby had made offers for other players during the transfer window, including Scunthorpe United striker Gary Hooper, who signed for Celtic.

"If Hooper had come for what we bid for him, it would have been a big fee but he chose to go somewhere else and part of that was to do with wages," said Glick.

"And you have to, as you would in any deal, walk away from the table when you feel it has gone past what good value would be."

Derby bid "well over" £1m for Hooper but Celtic got their man by splashing out £2.5m.

Glick dismissed reports that the Rams had bid for Notts County's attacking midfielder Ben Davies but confirmed that the player is one the manager is keen on.

“I like the footie we are starting to play, i am not too bother about Hulse going but i do worry about a replacement.
Who is going to be available when the loan window opens.
And most of all when are the board going to invest some cash.
We do have players out injured and at some stage fingers crossed they will make an appearance.
Loanees are only a short term help which i think is what the club is looking at for short term fixe's till out injured players get back to fitness.
All said and done, we must back Nigel and the players we have and hopefully the board might give Nigel the funds to bye a player or two with quality.”

    “Yeah, defending the indefensible

Like one or two others on here I don't buy it. Heard the int again on RadeoDireby , he states the club is showing progress although results aren't?

Oh yeah? You get what you deserve in footbal. We are a passing side yes. The ball gets passed back to midfield all the time then back to defence then bywater, then leacock, then bywater, back to Leacock then a danger pass to Savage, who get caught in possession, loses the ball, hey presto goal.

Each week the team is going to quote "cut out the silly mistakes" and lo - we throw away leads draws anget the sum total of 4 points, lost three on the trot and then a draw. mmmm

I just dont buy it, we have no recognised FIT striker, we have no bite in midfield ala Willie Carlin or Archie Gemmill. Savage just gets booked and then becomes impotent, and then gets subbed as he needs to be on 606.
Leacock get frustrated as the ball keeps coming back to him due to lack of aforementioned midfield, so he attacks himself, leaving a huge hole in defence, the defence gets drawn across one side of the field, the team lose possession, as he have no midfield, Leacock stranded, hey presto opposistion scores.

There's areason we only have 4 points(1 more than Failest Red Scum) , we are not good enough. JAM TOMORROW GLICK???< I DONT BUY IT”

“So, the club did offer to sign someone 'like Shaun Barker' over the summer in excess of £1m.

In my opinion, the club have done absolutely the right thing in walking away from these kind of deals when the price goes over the top. Hooper is never worth £2.5m.

And can anyone come on here and tell me that Brayford and Bailey have not been 2 of our best players this season, signed for next to nothing? Both young and keen who want to play for the club. And Tomas Cywka looks a real talent as well.

Derby fans need to stop moaning and start living in the real world. The £10m wage budget seems realistic to me. If Kris Commons gets £15k a week, then there is £750k a year, I bet Savage is not on much less so there is £1.5m on just 2 players.

We need to get behind the team, we have some genuinely good players at the club now and a fairly young squad. The rubbish that has been served up in the last few years, I'm glad to be seeing some decent football at last as, in time, that will bring results. I much prefer watching this team than the rubbish under Billy Davies, even though we spawned 1-0 wins week in, week out. I actually feel like I'm being entertained now.”

“The question is more apt when we have a number of guys carrying injuries but they are not serious injuries, apart from Steven Davies."

Who are these other strikers then? Porter - who has been basically injured since he arrived with us. Who else? I'm sorry GSE I just won't buy this nonsense any more. DCFC fans may be loyal and keep on buying season tickets but we are not stupid. We have one of the highest wage bills in the Championship (god knows how with all the recently departed players) but here¿s the crucial thing - we have one of the highest average gates as well.

'We have the same objectives as the supporters and all the decisions we are making are being based on those objectives'

I'm not sure that you do Tom. I want a team built around a desire to push forward, a team that shows ambition. I want to DCFC to grow not to stagnate. GSE seems to want nothing more than to improve the value of the club even if this means letting us rot around the championship relegation zone. Well, do us all a favour and sell it before it¿s too late and we are playing in front of 10,000 in league 2. I supported our new American owners from the start and think in many ways Glick has done a good job of 'stabilizing' DCFC- but I fear that unless there is some moderate investment in our playing staff, irrespective of injuries, we may found ourselves in a desperate situation. The worst of it is we are playing some lovely football ¿ we might actually start winning games regularly as well if we had a competitive squad.”

“"I think we have shown a willingness to invest in the squad"

No you haven't. I count six in and six out this season. And we spent £400,000 plus add ons for Bailey and Brayford whilst recieving allegedly £750,000 plus add ons for Hulse. Plus we will have recieved a decent loan fee for Varney didn't mention that did you Glick.

That leaves us with a transfer profit which has not been reinvested.

"We have a temporary injury problem but the squad is not as lean as it seems at the moment".

What like the "temporary" injury problem
we carried for the whole of last season and which has continued into this season. Why have the injury problems not been addressed by now??? Or if we know we are going to be carrying injuries then why have we not got a squad that can cope???

"But we have to have some budget discipline and that is where you get the separation, because some supporters would rather you spare no expense, gamble and go for it"

I think thats an insult to some fans. Yes there or the odd few that don't care about finances. But most of us want to see a steady well thought out building of a squad. If that means getting in a player for £750k that will improve us then we should get that player. At the moment we are still in asset stripping mode.

"There are going to be more and better players available, because of the Premier League's 25-man squad rule,"

I'm not sure about this one. for 2 reasons. 1. emergency loans are only permitted to stay with a club for a max of 3 months so we are hardly going to get any consistency. Just as the player settles in they will then have to leave.
    2. What people like Glick are not telling you is that any player under 21 can still play in the Prem without being listed in the squad. So clubs will hold onto their young talent as a back up for the first team. They will then fill their 25 man squad with their best fit players.

The only players that will be available are the youngsters who are a million miles from being ready to play in a first team. Players who are injured and looking to recover, Or the players who do not feature in the clubs plans and would have been available to us anyway.

    Yeah sounds great.”
